ok. off topic, but i just wanted to share.  I did Fran this morning for fun and got 9:33 (previous PR was 8:30).  I was pretty bummed about the slower time, so I started to make a list of my excuses on why I was slower, and then I justified those excuses as learning items.  I thought I would share with y’all:

1)Good Form, Slower Time

I was really trying to focus on better form.  I kept picturing a judge next to me yelling “no rep”.  I dinged myself 2 reps on the thrusters (it should have been more).  Sloppy form is bad in the long run and it could lead to injuries.

2)Full Range of Motion

The last time I did Fran, I used the racks for my thrusters.  This time I started from the floor.  And because I had to drop the bar at least a dozen times, thats a dozen power cleans I had to add to the workout.  When you ‘scale’, times are not comparable.  The slightest changes to weight, height, and range of motion makes significant differences in the type of workout you get.

3) Rest

The last three nights I’ve averaged less than 5 hours of sleep.  The body needs rest to recover, sleep is just as important as working out and eating healthy.

4) Negativity breeds negativity

As I was doing the workout, I was feeling very tired and unmotivated.  I broke up the sets and thought, “ok, just one more and I’ll take a break”.  And guess what, I was only able to do one more.  But surprisingly, when I told myself to do two more, I did.  I set myself up to do less and I did, and my time showed it.

5) Working out by yourself sucks

Before coming to Crossfit, I underestimated the power of working out with others.  Amy would come home and tell me about her workout and I would say, “I can do that here at home, I don’t need to go to the gym.”  But the fact is you end of working out much harder with others around.  When you have a trainer pushing you, its much harder to stop and take a break (which I did during Fran today).  The competition is also good (when you see that other athlete next to you and wonder what round they are on, it only pushes you more).  Or trying to keep up to that one athlete that always seems to beat your time, this keeps you from stopping.

At home, by myself, it was so much easier to take longer rests, to not pick up the bar, and have sloppy range of motions.  Plus its lonely…

That’s my list of excuses…I hope next time the list gets shorter.

AWESOME!!!  Nick, you are truly a “legit” CrossFitter!  Every point you made was right on the money!  Just switching from the rack to the ground is super major…these are in no way excuses.  They are valid reasons for a change in WOD time.

Let’s do the WOD next week - you pick the day - and we will keep the legit movements and move from the ground.  But, you will come in well rested, positive attitude and a trainer there to keep you moving.  I KNOW you will beat 8:30 and it will be a legit Fran time!!!

I am SOOOO proud of you!  Everyone can learn from this post today - thank you!

Nick, as ever, I learn so much from you!!!  Thanks for sharing your journey and letting us learn along with you!

Nick - Love the post.  Especially about form.  Sometimes in the heat of competition, form is thrown out which is NOT GOOD!  You are a great person to work out with because you are competative and supportive at the same time.  I haven’t been in lately because of my knee, turns out I am going to be getting another operation.  It’s just a scope but I’ll be out for a little while.  The better shape I am in when I go under the knife, the better off I will be in my recovery.  Till then I will be doing what I can, so don’t be worried if you see me working out!  smile
